Captain's Newsletter
Greetings,
This week I would like to talk about cell phone theft. Cell theft has been a hot topic for some time here in San Francisco. Just this week the SFGate published an article (http://blog.sfgate.com/crime/2013/05/16/cell-phone-theft-map/) and map regarding cell theft s in the City. The map shows a concentration of thefts downtown areas, as well as a small pocket in the central Mission. The majority of cell phone thefts we see in the Mission occur on and around Muni.
On Wednesday, May 15, 2012 at approximately 8 AM another such theft occurred on a bus at 21st and Mission. In that case the suspect grabbed the victim’s Iphone as she was reading an article on her phone. The suspect fled the bus and officers quickly arrived at the scene. The officers immediately began tracking the victim’s cell phone and were able to locate it in the Ingleside district. Officers from Mission and Ingleside Stations were able to locate the suspect, take him into custody and retrieve the victim’s phone. We believe that this particular suspect was responsible for multiple thefts from the Muni and we were able to charge him in four separate incidents.
There are several ways in which you can protect yourself from thefts while riding on public transportation. Please visit San Francisco SAFE at (www.sfsafe.org/brochures/PublicTransportationSafety.pdf) some helpful tips regarding safety tips.
Have a Great Weekend,
Captain Bob Moser
